FIVE go mad for it – that’s the barnstorming news from York Boxing Club as it resumes a new domestic season.
Trainer Billy Wilson revealed to The Press that a quintet of club fighters will be making seasonal debuts in the senior Amateur Boxing Association championships which open at Doncaster this Friday.
Said Wilson: “We had one of our busiest years last year, but we always said we wanted to be even more involved this season, so it’s great to have five lads going for success this week.”
The youngest of the York five is 17-year-old Brady Coombs. Still eligible to compete in the junior ranks, he opted to step up and will make his senior debut.
Welterweight Sonny Dalton is having his first bout since he lost in last year’s final, while Thomas Mulvenna, a fellow finalist like Dalton last year, is appearing in the cruiser-weight division. He won the Yorkshire title in April to round off a hectic 2011 season.
Top of the York bill is Paul Gordon, who has dropped a division from light-heavyweight to middleweight for the new campaign, while the fifth fighter will be Joe Hines at light-welterweight.
