LIGHTNING Lee Stewart was dubbed “the fighting pride of York” after a comprehensive points victory in his second pro boxing bout.
The 21-year-old Clifton cuffer beat journeyman Kristian Laight 40-36 over four three-minute rounds at the Barnsley Metrodome.
Laight, a veteran of 114 fights – and now 102 defeats – rated Stewart as a “good prospect who will go far” after the one-sided contest.
And MC Phil Seymour, the former York City Knights commercial manager, hailed the youngster as the “fighting pride of York” after an impressive follow up to his debut win at York’s Energise centre in May.
Roared on by a 150-strong following from York, Stewart was always in control of the fight – much to the delight of trainer Glenn Banks.
“He put in a polished and mature performance,” he said. “Considering his opponent had the advantage of weight, height and experience, and was a southpaw, it didn’t faze Lee at all.
“The 150 people who went from York made themselves heard and were the best crowd on the night. They gave Lee a really good reception.”
Banks added he was hopeful of lining up another fight for Stewart, York’s newest professional boxer, before the end of the year.
