THE Pocklington Rocket will need to launch when he fights as the main supporting act to the return of former World, Commonwealth and British Champion Graham Earl next month.
Matthews’ ninth professional bout sees him step up to six, three-minute rounds for the first time as he takes on tough Birmingham boxer Terry Carruthers at Stadium MK on March 13.
The middleweight, who turns 22 tomorrow, is second on the bill on a night of boxing designed to showcase Earl’s return in an international light-welterweight contest.
Currently 27th in the British rankings, the undefeated Matthews was last in action in November when he defeated Davey Jones on points over six, two-minute rounds at the Gemtec Arena, in Hull.
Having boxed just 34 rounds in his fights to date, Matthews goes toe-to-toe with a fighter who has won five times, drawn four and lost three – being knocked out twice.
Matthews’ trainer Glen Banks reckons it could be an explosive night for his charge.
“His preparation has been great and he is the fittest he has ever been,” he said.
“He is training with myself during the week and going to Finchley on a weekend to work with Joe Gregory.
“Carruthers comes forward and he works really hard. He will be coming to win.”
Matt Doyle, who won his first bout as a professional against Matt Seawright during the fight night at York’s Oaklands Sports Centre last October, returns to the ring against Sheffield-based Afghan Monsoor Walli at Don Valley Stadium on March 21.
Walli, who has a 1-1 record, lost his first fight on points against Seawright but then knocked out Mark Hudson in the first round of their contest at the Rio Grande Banqueting Hall in Bradford.
“Matt is developing well,” Banks added. “He’s like a workhorse in the gym. We do three 6am runs and he is in the gym five times a week. Sparring is going really well.”
Banks’ other fighter, Danny Gel, makes his professional debut at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground on March 27 with an opponent yet to be finalised.
For ticket details on all three fights, ring Matthews on 07944 972015, Doyle on 07515 163176 and Gel on 07825 166311.
