BOXING trainer Glenn Banks has recruited another fighter to his burgeoning York stable.
Danny Gell, son of York Amateur Boxing Club boss Lewis Gell, has joined Pocklington Rocket Harry Matthews and Acomb’s Matt Doyle under the city professional trainer’s stewardship.
Gell, 27, lives in Acomb and had 19 fights in the amateur ranks – winning 12. He started training at York’s North Street gym under Jack Wraine and also boxed for the now defunct St Patrick’s ABC in Leeds.
He’s been training with Banks since July at the Roko gym at Clifton Moor but, following the successful completion of medical tests, is now ready for his first excursion in pro ranks.
His debut has been lined up for March 27 at Leeds’ Elland Road ground, with an opponent still to be confirmed, and Gell is naturally excited about the event.
“I decided boxing professionally is what I want to do and I am 27 now so it is my last chance. I feel as though I can definitely do it,” he said. “Obviously I am a bit nervous but that’s a good thing.
“I am an all-round balanced boxer. I think my power is a great asset and I’ve got good speed and fitness. I think I suit a professional style. You have to bounce around as an amateur – it’s more of a sprint.
“In the professional game you have to slow it down and think about your shots. I like to plant my feet a bit more.
“I am working with Harry Matthews and Matt Doyle and I couldn’t be happier.”
Banks is also hopeful about Gell’s prospects. “He has been boxing since the age of about 11 or 12,” he said. “He’s always been in the game and it is now or never for him. We want to take it step by step.
“Danny is very talented. He’s got very good boxing skills and he is adapting to the pro style. He’s sparring and he’s got a good all-round boxing style.”
