NORTH Yorkshire golfer Simon Dyson begins his pursuit for Portuguese progress today boosted by an unexpected fillip.

The 36-year-old Malton & Norton Golf Club ace is at the Oceanico GC in the resort of Vilamoura contesting the Portugal Masters.

He arrived in inconsistent form having just failed to make the last-day cut for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship held in the east of Scotland last week. However, while Dyson did not get through to the decisive day of a tournament that carried a prize fund of five million euros, he still managed to improve his world rating, going up one place to 99th.

He also sat in 26th place in the European Tour’s end-of-season Race To Dubai leaderboard. Barring an absolute calamity, or injury, he will be comfortably in the top 60 who will battle for next month’s lucrative conclusion.

Today, the York-born star starts the first round in Vilamoura alongside South Africa’s Thomas Aiken, who is ranked 139th in the world, and Alexander Levy of France, who lies 11 places behind Dyson in those marks.
