YORK Amateur Boxing Club’s first ‘home’ show of the season survived two pre-bout blows to stage a knockout night.

Head coach Billy Wilson was hampered by the loss of no fewer than four contests when representatives of the Golden Gloves club from Bolton in Lancashire failed to attend.

Meanwhile, he also received a message from the trainer of the scheduled opponent of 16-year-old York ABC prospect Courtney Catterson that she would not be travelling from Surrey to York’s Tramways club.

However, Wilson worked frantically to get in replacements for all bar Catterson.

And one of those late-arranged clashes saw Jorvik ABC’s Nathaniel Smith named boxer of the night after a toe-to-toe triumph over West Leeds ABC opponent Jordan Westmoreland.

Said Wilson: “It was a cracking fight, two good kids really going at it.

“Overall, it was a great night in which we still had about 15 contests on the bill.”

While disappointed there was no opponent for Catterson ahead of next Monday’s start of her women’s junior Amateur Boxing Association campaign in Mexborough, Wilson was thrilled at the performance of one of the youngest York ABC battlers on the card.

Lennox Tyers, who is aged 11, produced a gutsy display to win his fight on points prompting Wilson to declare the youngster had the makings of a junior ABA champion in years to come.
