SUCCESS, including triumph for Courtney Catterson in the first ever boxing bout by a York girl, was all York Amateur Boxing Club’s impressive away start to the campaign.

The 16-year-old Catterson, who has turned to boxing after several years starring in kick-boxing where she won the world junior title last autumn, was among three York ABC winners on a bill against the Army at the Hull Kingston ABC show.

York ABC head coach Billy Wilson said that getting Catterson a debut bout had proved a difficult task, but when she was finally called upon to tackle Sam Brown from Hull, she prevailed with a points triumph after three rounds.

Said Wilson: “To think that a lot of people are expecting a lot from her and also how her debut was at the Hull home of her opponent, Courtney boxed extremely well in her first fight.”

The other successes were claimed by light-middleweight Dean Croft, who stopped Callum Lawson of the Army in the second round, while middleweight Paul Gordon out-pointed Dan Bevin in a four-round contest.

The York schedule was then rounded off in style by youngster Harry Suter. Fighting in the Yorkshire schoolboys Amateur Boxing Association finals at Havercroft Sports Centre, he came through a toe-to-toe tussle with Ryan Crawlin from Hull.

That puts Suter into the national quarter-finals against a Manchester-based opponent this weekend.

Gordon, meanwhile, will be fighting in the senior ABA’s later this month.

Added Wilson: “Both Harry and Paul will be up against strong oponents, but both have got good chances of going further.

“Things are really going well at the club.

“We’ve produced ten champions in the last five seasons, so we’ve shown that we can get some very good results.”
