UNIVERSITY Student ladies proved too strong for RI Monday/Wednesday ‘B’ at the Heslington campus and ran out comfortable 8-1 winners in ladies division one of the York Badminton League.

Rachel Farrington and Beth Cowell were the pick of the student pairs, claiming each rubber in straight games for a return of 130-86.

Huntington Ladies entertained Selby Jubilee in ladies two and were good value for a 6-3 win.

Beverly Tebbutt and Angela Hobman put the home side on the winning path with three wins for 140-96, including a 21-19, 14-21, 21-15 success over Jo Murphy and Ning Dawson who took two Jubilee points.

University Student men’s ‘A’ scored an 8-1 home win over RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘B’ in men’s one after several close-fought games.

James Hor and Baillie Watterson were best for the campus with three excellent straight wins for a total of 126-47.

Mike Powell and James Sheldon picked up the Institute consolation.

Selby/Drax ‘A’ gained their first win after a 7-2 home win over a tough University Students ‘B’ team.

Scott Anderson and Dennis Bradley were the top Selby couple with three straight wins for 146-90, which included a 19-21, 21-12, 21-8 triumph over Tom Dainty and James Somerside, who took both campus wins.

Terrys went down 5-4 against both Selby Jubilee ‘B’ and Knavesmire in men’s three.

James Collins and Tom Wild starred for Jubilee with three straight wins for 130-94, while David Brogden and Paul Rogers were best for Knavesmire with three hard-fought successes for 179-155.

John Richardson and Chris Smethurst took two wins for Terrys in both matches.

RI Monday/Wednesday ‘C’ made it four wins in a row after a 7-2 home conquest of Selby Jubilee in men’s three. C Thompson and M Poulter were the top junior pair for the Institute with three straight wins for a total of 126-79.

University Student’s ‘B’ just managed a narrow 5-4 home win over Selby Jubilee ‘A’ in mixed two after three games went to a deciding end.

The match was tied at 4-4 going into the last rubber in which Tom Dainty and Clare Breare kept their nerve to beat Andy Hatfield and Jo Murphy 11 and 13 to swing the overall match win.

Fulfordgate ‘A’ scored a fine 5-4 away win over Nestle Rowntree in mixed three after a good team display.

Hazel Winfield and Mat Hobman top-scored once again for the visitors with three straight wins for 126-83, Steve Walker and Zoe Cook played well to score two more vital wins for the visitors.

RI Tueday/Thursday ‘C’ beat Fulfordgate ‘B’ 6-3 away, and then lost 5-4 at home to Pocklington.
