Clifton close gap in York Badminton League with win over RI rivals


Clifton ‘C’ moved into third place in men’s division two after a 5-4 home win over second-placed RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘B’ in the York Badminton League.

Simon Christian and David Woods swung the match for Clifton with three wins for a 137-98 return.

RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘B’ rallied to score a 6-3 home win over a depleted Shepherds team. Ian Sinker and Shafiq Ahmed won the vital rubber over Sam Watson and James Pearson.

Shepherds had earlier hosted Pocklington’s men’s team and won through 7-2. Dave Simpson and Dave Byram combined well to head the home averages with 126-56.

University Staff Men’s struggle for consistency continues after 6-3 home defeats to Knavesmire and Copmanthorpe. Graeme Butcher and Tony McGale were the pick of the Copmanthorpe pairings with three straight wins.

York RI Monday/Wednesday ‘B’ held their grip on men’s three with a 7-2 win at Fulfordgate.

The youthful RI team have now won five matches for the loss of only eight rubbers. Sam Lee and Richard Morley continued their good understanding to take their three rubbers for 151-128.

The battle of the campuses saw University of York Ladies beat St John’s 7-2 in Ladies division two.

Nicola Hainsworth and Joy Wing took both St John’s wins, but lost to Becky Ward and Liz McFadzean.

Clifton ‘B’ proved too strong for their ‘C’ team in mixed one.

Lucy Smith and Kevin Davison were in great form for the winners, taking three straight wins.

Gerry Screeton and Mike Hourston stopped the whitewash with a 21-17, 21-10 win over Dave Rogers and Shelagh Barker.

RI Monday/Wednesday ‘A’ took pole position in mixed one after an 8-1 win over their ‘B’ team. Chris Hunt and Kate Jackson headed the ‘A’ team averages with three wins for 126-76.

Rowntrees are still waiting for their first mixed two win after a 6-3 defeat at Tadcaster 86 ‘A’.

A close match saw Pete Smith and Lesley Bowling take three home wins for 142-114 which included a 16-21, 21-16, 21-19 over Phil Grant and Helen Shepherd.

University Students ‘B’ made it six wins from six matches after a 9-0 win at Varsity in mixed three. James Somerside and Rachel Wood top-scored for the campus side.

Riverside ‘B’ are second in mixed three after an 8-1 home win over a strong Selby/Drax ‘B’ team. Ian McInlay and Sue Sharp top-scored with three wins for 162-131.

RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘B’ head mixed five after a 7-2 away win over Huntington ‘B’. Brian Morley and Marlene Woodward were the pick of the RI pairs.
