Play-off plunder sought by battling American football team The Centurions

AMERICAN football play-off glory is still on the agenda for the York Centurions.

The Centurions, the University of York’s American football team, qualified for the Challenge Trophy after winning half of their eight regular season games.

Having not won a game in their inaugural season last year, the club will compete in the second tier of the play-offs.

Three games in the final week of the campaign caught up with the York team as, after a superb win over Lancaster Bombers, they lost home games to Manchester Tyrants and Sheffield Sabres.

The Tyrants triumphed 12-8 in the Centurions’ first game under floodlights at York Rugby Union Club’s Clifton Park base.

The visitors went 6-0 up but York levelled as quarterback Tim Blades threaded a pass to Nick Walter for a 25-yard touchdown. Zef Ruzcinski ran in the two-point conversion.

However, an errant throw gifted Manchester an interception and a touchdown and York ran out of time.

Then York hosted the Sabres on the 22 Acres and could only muster an interception from star linebacker Arthur Pitt.

The Centurions travel to Hull Sharks in the play-offs tomorrow.
