The temperature may be dipping but the action on the pitch showed no sign of cooling when the University of York hosted ten British Universities and Colleges’ Sports (BUCS) fixtures.
York students celebrated a generally successful day, having won most of the major battles.
One battle which wasn’t to be, however, was the men’s rugby match against Liverpool University, which had to be cancelled due to Liverpool’s coach breaking down.
Luck wasn’t on the side of the men’s rugby seconds either, who missed out by only one point against Durham University thirds.
Draw of the day proved to be the men’s hockey side, captained by Andy Harris.
The team have enjoyed a mixed start to the season, boasting tough away wins over both the University of Sheffield and the University of Sunderland but losing heavily to Newcastle University at home.
It was back to the positive when a brace of strikes from Nick Latcham secured a 2-0 win over Durham University fourths.
The women’s hockey side were also in fine form as they sent Leeds University fourths back home nursing an 8-0 defeat.
Captain Charlie Bartlett bagged herself two goals as did the mightily impressive Rachel Faustino.
Both teams are adjusting to new formations under the command of coach Paul Evans, but the improvement is shown by the women’s second team still unbeaten in the BUCS league, having toppled York St John 23-0.
With freshers beginning to find their feet the university’s hockey club is set for a fantastic season.
