University of York cricket team lose to Lancaster University

HOPES of a record fourth successive War of the Roses triumph were dashed as the University of York went down to Lancaster University.

The White Rose side got off to a great start over the Pennines with a three-wicket victory in the tournament opening cricket clash, Lancaster came from behind to win the Carter James Trophy by 52 points, with a 157.5-105.5 scoreline.

The trophy is named after the two men who created the first tournament – Lord James of York and Sir Charles Carter, of Lancaster – and has been running in some form since the two universities were founded.

Students compete in more than 100 sports and community events, ranging from traditional games like football and tennis to activities like debating and ballroom dancing.

York captain Emily Scott had nothing but praise for her team.

She said: “I want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all the students who took part from York.

“The competition has been fantastic, with sport of the highest quality. Congratulations to Lancaster.”
