FOR the first time in 2013 the University of York revelled in a full complement of British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) fixtures.

On the 3G pitch at the York Sport Village, the men’s firsts football team came from a goal down to beat Leeds Trinity and maintain their promotion push.

Second-half strikes from winger Ollie Harrison, who headed in an Ash Daly free-kick, and James Davies secured the win, though a howling wind made for a scrappy and disjointed affair.

Captain Matt Mawdesley said: “They were treacherous conditions, but we battled hard and deserved the win. We had the better chances throughout.”

There was also delight for the women’s football team, whose fine form continued with a crushing 11-0 win over Newcastle.

Strikers Amy Johnson and Jess Craig each bagged a hat-trick, but the star performer was winger Bea Rye, whose electric play was crucial in sparking a nine-goal flurry in the second half.

Much like their male counterparts, the women’s football side are now in pole position for promotion.

Both lacrosse sides romped to comfortable wins on 22 Acres, the men dismantling their Leeds opponents 23-4 to maintain their undefeated run.

Meanwhile, the women’s firsts were utterly dominant in sinking Sheffield Hallam 30-0.

Indoors, the men’s fencing team secured a 124-106 win over bitter rivals Lancaster with victory in the foil and the épee.

There was also an impressive display from the women’s volleyball team, who whitewashed leaders Sheffield.

Faultless displays from Christina Sechel and Joanna Lee meant that York maintained a healthy lead throughout.

One sour note came from the women’s basketball team, who were beaten 60-36 by Hull.

Both men’s squash teams also lost on home ground, but it will be hoped the results have little bearing on their final league finishes, with the two sides very much in the promotion hunt.
