A hectic day of British Universities and Colleges Sport with more than 40 fixtures involving York’s teams saw a series of solid results, most notably in football and lacrosse.

York’s men’s first-team footballers recorded their first league victory of the season, as a brace of goals from Dalton Harris toppled Huddersfield 2-1. Unbeaten so far this term, they have five points from three games.

The women’s firsts recorded a more emphatic victory, thumping city rivals York St John seconds 10-1 to preserve their 100 per cent record and stay top of the table.

There were also wins for the men’s second and third teams, while the fourths recorded a hard-earned draw.

In hockey, the ladies firsts who led the way, notching their first league win of the season, with a resounding 5-0 victory over York St John.

The men’s firsts continued their unbeaten start with a 3-3 draw at Leeds Met, while the ladies seconds hammered the same opposition 4-0.

But there were defeats for both the men’s seconds and thirds away from home.

Back in York there were good wins in lacrosse for both the men’s and women’s firsts, with York’s ladies particularly impressive in demolishing Newcastle 3rds 28-1.

The men’s rugby union seconds secured their progress in the Northern Conference Cup, with a superb performance allowing them to record a 24-21 victory over a strong Sheffield outfit.

One of the performances of the day was in badminton, as York’s men defeated Durham firsts by producing a scintillating display of quality and determination, while in Durham, York’s ladies battled to a draw.

Against Northumbria, York’s netball firsts suffered an agonising defeat, as an enthralling encounter ended in the hosts winning 33-32.

However with home advantage, both the seconds and thirds were able to record wins, the seconds avenging the defeat of the first team by defeating Northumbria fourths.

York’s men’s fencing firsts battled their way to a 129-116 victory over their Keele counterparts to end their run of three successive defeats, while the men’s volleyball team succumbed to a narrow 3-2 defeat against Sheffield firsts.

The men’s seconds also suffered defeat, this time the contest ending 3-0 to a strong Durham side.
