Rugby league chiefs need to show more interest in game below top level
Peter’s report was very good as usual and I agreed with all he said, apart from his remark regarding referee Mr Lawton and his touch judges.
Peter may think that I am overstating the point regarding forward passes but I noticed 20 or even more. I stand in the centre of the popular stand and have an excellent view of the game from there. I am quite aware some of the passes did not have a bearing on the game as a whole, but as everyone knows these passes are not allowed.
One of the tries scored by Leigh had three forward passes in the move. Moreover after that a Leigh player passed the ball off the floor when tackled and play was allowed to continue, and for Leigh’s last try the player knocked on under the York posts.
We could see this happen and we were approximately 100 yards away.
How could Lawton not see this and also the laying on in the tackle from the visitors?
I always thought an assessor also watched the match referee. Surely he must mark Mr Lawton very low and his touch judges were very, very poor indeed and that’s putting it mildly.
Having watched the TV game at Mount Pleasant, I was not surprised at Mr Lawton’s display. I suppose it’s a lot to ask for. The rugby league authorities should show more interest in the game in general and not focus only on Super League.
I have been a supporter of rugby league in York since the age of 11. I am now 76 years old.
