We are long-time season ticket holders at York City Knights and have attended all home matches this season. We were at the recent York versus Rochdale match, and have read The Press report of the rugby league disciplinary hearing which considered the sendings-off of both Paul and David March.

The match was indeed a fractious one and there were a number of penalties awarded and yellow cards brandished, one on both sides for dissent, before the two red cards were issued. However, the main issue to our minds is that there were just six minutes left, with York comfortably in the lead and heading for the win required to secure them a home play-off place. One would have thought that at this juncture it was imperative that all players, let alone those most senior and experienced, should maintain their discipline and avoid any untoward actions that could get them into trouble. How stupid and unprofessional, then, for the March brothers to make the response they did, whatever the provocation. Paul and David March have been important playmakers for York all season, but it has to be said that both have spent time in the sin-bin.

They should realise, without bleating about being persecuted, that the referee is right when he’s right, and right when he’s wrong – end of discussion.
