YORK City Rowing Club toiled in the bank holiday weekend heat to ensure the majority of honours from the Spring Regatta stayed in the city.

Last Saturday's Regatta was competed over 1000 metres from St Peter’s Boathouse to just above the club's boathouse on Lendal Bridge and attracted 20 clubs and over 180 crews from across the country.

And the hosts club enjoyed a good day, with YCRC junior, senior and masters rowers alike taking 36 of the 56 events offered over different boat classes and ages.

Anne Homa, regatta secretary, said: “It was great to see rowers from all sections of the club, many racing for the first time ever, enjoying racing good opposition in fantastic conditions.”

The triumphs on home waters follows a recent run of junior squad national successes.

March saw the J18 quad team claimed the club's first-ever win at the School’s Head of the River Race, finishing the mixed quads event a full 15 seconds ahead of the field on the Thames in London.

At Holme Pierrepoint in Nottingham in April, the WJ15 double scull won gold for Yorkshire in the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta.

Press officer Robyn Inglis said: "Thanks to Phil Jones and the rest of the coaches who put in so much time to help these juniors reach their potential and for the commitment shown by these young rowers.

"The next regatta at York will be the Summer Regatta on Sunday, June 24 and which promises close racing again, even if we cannot guarantee the same fabulous weather."
