TEENAGE motor racing star Matt Greenwood has made a good start to life on the track with two podium finishes on his senior racing debut at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Alongside Tockwith Motorsports team-mate Sarah Moore, the York 16-year-old showed maturity to end race one of the Britcar Dunlop Endurance Championship in first place and the second in third.

He will next compete at Silverstone on Saturday.

The pair qualified third in class for race one, a 50-minute sprint, which Moore began strongly before handing the wheel over to Greenwood to guide them into the lead and stay there with his raw pace and skill.

They were rewarded with pole position in their class for race two, a two-hour endurance race, which again ended with a top-three finish despite mechanical problems with their Ginetta G50.

Greenwood said of the two races: "It’s been an amazing weekend.

"After the euphoria of race one, this was a tough battle because of our mechanical issues, but both Sarah and I were able to keep the car on the track, out of trouble and bring it home.

“The driving style is so different (between sprint and endurance). Both Sarah and I had to be consistent, focus and refrain from going flat out into the first corner.

“It was about patience, which we both delivered, and we showed why we’re a good team.”

Although this championship will see him line up against drivers who have been racing since well before he was born, it is not a new experience for Greenwood, who started competing six years ago - and he only has plans to continue.

In 2015, Greenwood won the European Prokart Endurance Championship and, in 2016, he took to the UK circuits in the Junior Saloon Car Championship.

There, he claimed three top-10 finishes before moving onto the Fiesta Junior Championship in 2017 where he achieved an impressive 11 top-10 finishes.

And once finished with his GCSEs, Greenwood will move on to the Motor Sport Association Academy to take part in the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme.

He said: “I started my racing career back in 2012 when I was 10 years old. As soon as I sat in a kart I knew this was for me.

"My family have always been my biggest supporters and if it wasn’t for them I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today.

“My team is Tockwith Motorsports (TMS), and it has a pedigree of looking after young drivers and nurturing them through the ranks.

“My aim is to concentrate at this level for a few years before I concentrate more on the European motor racing scene and, if I am honest with myself, I would hope to be racing at events, like the Le Mans 24 Hours, within three years.

"That is how determined and serious I am about my motorsport career.”
