YORK-BASED sidecar passenger Sue Taylor has returned to regular Formula 2 racing with driver Wes Pettman to compete in the FSRA British Championship - despite a high-speed crash on her comeback.

Taylor, who has previously raced at the Isle of Man TT races, initially returned to the sport last year after a break of 23 years.

She made her comeback in a Formula 1 event only for a 120mph crash to result in a dislocated and broken shoulder, and curtail her season.

She nevertheless teamed up with Pettman again at Croft Circuit last month and, although it was only going to be a one-off, the pair got on so well on the track that they decided to join forces for the season, and they are currently performing above-par.

Pettman's sidecar bike is a pre-injection model which is out-classed by the fuel-injected engines the pair go up against. However, he enjoys entering the longer races of the British Championship and his consistent laps and reliability mean the duo are currently standing sixth in the table after two rounds.

Last weekend, the pair raced at a very cold and wet Cadwell Park. Taylor had raced there many times before but that was on the old club circuit so about a third of the lap over the mountain section was new to her.

She said: “Cadwell used to be one of my favourite circuits so I was looking forward to getting back there. I’m sure I would have loved it more if the weather had been better. I can’t ever remember coming in from a race and being as cold as I was there.”

This weekend the team are competing at Mallory Park where they are entered into both the British Championship races and the Pre-injection Series races where they will be competing with bikes of a similar standing.
