CITY of York Hockey Club Men I secured promotion from North League division one thanks to a 5-2 win over Gateshead.

The Minster-city side finished the campaign second, a point ahead of Leeds II, to return to the premier division at the first time of asking.

Despite the dressing room nerves, City took to the pitch confidently, holding onto possession and creating chances in the Gateshead 25.

The hosts took the lead through Tom Feasby as he finished off a short corner and Adam Hunter was unlucky not to double the advantage shortly after from Alex Cockram's through-ball.

However, it did not take long for him to make amends as he deftly deflected a well-delivered Cockram ball in from another short corner for a two-goal half-time cushion.

Gateshead looked threatening throughout from aerial balls and put pressure on City in the second half, winning back-to-back short corners that the hosts defended well.

From the second of these, Cockram was able to break and picked out Feasby to slam into the backboard before Mikey Black converted Feasby's pass at the back post for four.

Gateshead pulled two back against the run of play as City keeper Elliott Walker was caught out by a mis-hit shot and a double deflection but City were able to put the game to bed as Cockram rattled a shot into the bottom right corner from 10 yards with three minutes remaining.

Goals from Josh De Silva and Ben Stafford earned City of York III a 2-2 draw at Leeds V in Yorkshire League division one.

City of York VIII won 5-0 at Driffield III in division five north in the first of their weekend double-header games.

The visitors had Chris Allerton injured early on but began to gel quickly and opened the scoring through Luke Harbord.

Zak Pierson doubled City's advantage before the break and netted his second just after alongside Cameron Mackay and Zack Perryman.

The next day, City drew 3-3 at home to Acomb II. See the Acomb report for full details.

City of York Ladies I ended their North League division one season with an emphatic 7-2 home win over relegated Didsbury Greys.

The hosts started slowly, allowing Didsbury to open the scoring, but City got going with good play down the left.

Hannah Smith levelled the contest after picking up the ball on the 23-yard line and firing into the top right corner and Steph Wilkinson put City ahead with a hard hit into the bottom right from a short corner.

Laura Horne put City two goals to the good following some slick play before Didsbury pulled one back.

City responded quickly, however, and got the ball up the other end to offload for Smith's second and a two-goal half-time advantage.

The hosts came out strongly in the second period with well-executed defensive transfers and fast passages of play to keep the ball in their opponents' half.

Ali Couttie made it five with a neat deflection from Emma Bennett's ball and Lily Rowntree got on the scoresheet, slipping the ball past the keeper.

Smith rounded off the scoring with her hat-trick goal, beating several players and finishing.
