YORK Indoor Bowls Club's successful season continued as they lifted the Yorkshire Double Rinks trophy - losing only one point all day.

It was the first time York have won the trophy since 2014.

The round-robin competition was played at New Earswick IBC and saw two points awarded for each winning rink and two for the aggregate score.

The first game saw York beat Doncaster.

Jeff Normanton, John Whiteley, Mark Clarke and Dave Stroughair led 8-1 and, despite being pegged back to 9-7, surged clear to finish 21-9.

Kieran Earnshaw, Mick Cooney, Tony Horobin and Jason Parkinson drew a tight game 13-13 after dropping a two on the last. This was the Thanet Road team's only dropped point.

Redcar beat North Cave 29-24, picking up all six points, but York saw them off 55-17.

Parkinson's team went from 8-4 up to win 33-6, while Stroughair's team pulled away from 8-7 up after eight ends to finish 22-11.

North Cave lost 32-31 to Doncaster, 4-2 on points.

York went into their last game against North Cave knowing one point would secure them the title and they got all six, although both rinks made heavy work of it as Stroughair's trailed 9-8 before picking up a two on the last to win 10-9 and Parkinson's trailed 9-8 before finishing 13-9.

Meanwhile, York IBC ran their Easter Pairs competition for the first time in eight years under a new format and it proved popular - with Sheila Turpin and Dave Snarr taking the trophy.

Each team played three games, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals, and those finishing fifth to eighth going into the plate.

Only two pairs had 100 per cent records in the group stage, with Jen Brown and Gordon Fennell topping the table on shots difference from Pete Riley and Terry Wheatley - although both duos lost in the semi-finals.

Brown and Fennell fell 11-6 to Turpin and Snarr, and Riley and Wheatley lost 8-7 to Alan Braithwaite and John Cooper.

The final went to and fro before Snarr and Turpin won 9-7.

The plate was won by Mal Rankeillor and Bernadette Johnson, who beat Jack Woodworth and John Walton 11-3 in the final.

York's in-house knockout finals have also begun.

Trevor Scott won the Veterans' Singles Plate, beating 2016 winner Dave Clarke 21-15. Scott led 13-1 but Clarke came back to 15-14 before Scott resumed control.

Pauline Cooper won the Ladies' Over-55s Singles crown for the third consecutive year as she beat Bernadette Johnson 21-4. Johnson, in her first season, only really hoped to get on the scoreboard but did better than that as she kept the game going over 15 ends.

Tomorrow, the in-house finals continue at 6.30pm with Jen Brown's team taking on Lynn Tattersall's in the Ladies' Knockout Triples, Dave Stroughair and John Stroughair playing Mike Snowden and Dave Clarke in the Gents' Simpson Pairs, and Neal Macdonald meeting Graham Instone in the Gents' Singles Plate.

On Saturday, York hope to secure the Yorkshire Ladies' League title as they play North Cave at noon.
