YORKSHIRE upset the form book as they beat favourites Devon 42-39 in the EIBA Under-25s Double Rinks final held at Melton Mowbray.

Holders Devon had won the trophy three times in the last four years but Yorkshire took control of the game after the 10th end when they moved the aggregate score from 18-17 to 40-28 with three ends to play.

Neal Macdonald (York), James Frith (Harrogate), Liam Creaser (North Cave) and Kieran Earnshaw (York) won 24-22, and Luke Nicholls (North Cave), John Hall, Matthew Bell and Jack Bird (all Scarborough) held on to win 18-17.

This was the first time Yorkshire had won the trophy since the competition started in 1997.

Meanwhile, Linda Harrison, Dot Kennelly and Melanie Brooke became York's sixth team to qualify for the last 16 of a national competition this season as they beat Barwell 21-17 in the Ladies Over-50s Triples at Lincoln.

They now play Mote Park (Maidstone) in the finals at Nottingham on April 9.

Club-mate Zoe Eagles is vying to reach the Ladies Singles finals today as she plays her rearranged game against Barwell's Barbara Lewis. If successful, she will play Banbury's Katherine Hawes at Melton tomorrow at 1pm.

York were relegated from the North Eastern Ladies League section 'A' when they lost to champions Selby 73-60, picking up only three points when they needed seven to stay up.

With three ends to play they were in with a big chance as the score stood at 56-53 to Selby with three rinks in the balance. But the champs had the best of the run-in.

At home, Brenda Love, Chris Reaston, Maggie Pallister and Pauline Cooper led 14-9 but went into their last end 17-16 down before equalising.

Ann Donaldson, Eva Snarr, Kath Pepper and Pat Potter lost a tight game 16-14.

In Selby, Sheila Clargo, Pat Berwick, Joan Knight and Pauline Armitage put in an impressive display and led 17-4 with four ends to play and finished 19-12.

But Maureen Robinson, Sue Jeffrey, Jean Williams and Pat Bracken went down 28-10.

York's Gordon Little Trophy proved a success with eight teams split into two groups playing the two-wood triples format.

It was won by John Sandle, Colin Robinson - who was on the winning team last year - and Paul Milliner, who pipped Dee Robinson, Allan May and Kev Potter 9-8 in the final.

On Sunday, York IBC's Easter Pairs competition takes place, starting at 10am. Competitors are asked to turn up by 9.30am.

Next Tuesday, domestic competitions start at Thanet Road with the Ladies Over-55s, Vets and Vets Plate all taking place at 2pm, followed by the Ladies, Gents, Gents' Plate and the Under-25s at 7pm.

Next Wednesday at 6.30pm, Pete Waring's team meet Stuart Smith's in the Gents' Knockout Triples final, and the Mixed Knockout Pairs final also takes place between last year's winners, Alan Vowles and Helen Wood, and Nigel Macdonald and Lynn Tattersall.
