CITY of York Hockey Club Men I's promotion push in North League division one will go down to the wire after they dropped points during a weekend double-header against Preston II.

A 2-2 away draw followed by a resounding 8-1 home win have left City second in the division with only a home fixture against bottom side Gateshead to play.

Third-placed Leeds II, who won one and lost one of their weekend fixtures, sit a point below and level on goal difference. They travel to second-bottom side Preston for their final game.

City's fixture in Preston went into the break goalless following a stagnant first half before the hosts took the lead two minutes after the restart.

The visitors reacted well and levelled only minutes later as Dan Ellwood fizzed a reverse shot over the keeper and, with five minutes remaining, man-of-the-match Tom Feasby made a scintillating run to set up Jack Purrington with a daring lob to score.

With just 30 seconds remaining, however, Preston broke and levelled from a turnover on the halfway line.

Preston opened the scoring in the reverse fixture only three minutes in, but City composed themselves and went into the break a goal to the good.

Man-of-the-match Ellwood bagged his first hat-trick of the season in the second period and, as the visitors tired, City netted a further three.

Alongside Ellwood's treble, Alex Cockram got a brace while Tom Feasby, Jack Fletcher and new addition Alex Martin were all on the scoresheet.

City of York II secured a top-four finish in the Yorkshire League premier division with one game to play thanks to a 4-2 win at Huddersfield Dragons - 24 hours after a 6-1 loss at leaders Leeds Adel.

York went into the break at Adel with the scores at 1-1 thanks to James Fitton's powerful drag flick, but the Leeds side regained the lead after the restart and hit four more late on as City's bare-11 squad tired.

In Huddersfield, City dominated early but conceded first.

Dan Hyden equalised for the visitors before Ollie Fryer gave City the lead.

Second-team debutant Jon Woodhouse fired in a penalty flick and Dan Tompkins rocketed home a corner either side of another Huddersfield goal.

City of York III lost both of their weekend games in division one, going down 3-2 at Ben Rhydding II and 6-3 at Thirsk & Malton.

City of York IV recovered a two-goal half-time deficit at home to Lindum III for a well-deserved 6-4 win thanks to a Flyn Mullins hat-trick, Bryce Tuckett's double and Josh de Silva's strike.

City of York V took maximum points from their two weekend games in division three.

Man-of-the-match Pat Herriott's brace and Ben Foster's strike sealed a 3-1 win at Slazengers II.

Herriott then hit a double in the 5-2 win over Rotherham alongside Andy Richardson's brace and Foster's goal. Andy Kay was man of the match.

City of York VI beat Wakefield IV 3-1 in division four north thanks to goals from Rob Barker, Laurence Thornton and Paul Rowntree.
