CITY of York Hockey Club Ladies V suffered a disappointing end to the Yorkshire League division four north season as they lost 4-2 at home to Bradford.

The hosts started the day in sixth place but a slow start and good goalkeeping from the Bradford shot-stopper meant City were leapfrogged by the visitors and dropped to eighth.

Bradford took the lead early in the game, making the most of City's sluggish opening, but the hosts regrouped and won a succession of short corners.

A number passed without success before one was slipped to Rebecca Copperthwaite to strike home and level.

However, Bradford came back and got another to give themselves a goal lead by half-time.

Both sides came out strongly in the second half, but it was City who hit the backboard first, as Claire Wiggins drove up the left and crossed in for Copperthwaite to slip the ball to the right of the keeper and in.

City kept fighting and putting pressure on the visitors' goal but their numerous attempts on goal were repelled by the visiting keeper.

At the other end, Bradford made some quick slips past the City defence and found two goals to put the game beyond the hosts.

Rebecca Copperthwaite was City's player of the match.

City of York Ladies I were comprehensively beaten 5-1 at North Hockey division one leaders Pendle Forest.

Their final fixture of the season sees them host bottom side Didsbury Greys who have lost 16 of their 21 matches this campaign.

City of York Ladies II were beaten 3-0 at 11th-placed Bridlington in the Yorkshire League premier division.

The 10th-placed visitors are just about guaranteed safety thanks to their far superior goal difference.
