YORK Knavesmire Harriers have enjoyed a strong end to the 2018 Championship Cross Country season.

Stuart Grange also took second place at a fell race in Goathland while, further afield, Steve Maddison finished the Tokyo Marathon with a good time.

In the National Cross Country Men's race, the Mire men took a creditable 48th place out of 162 teams.

Veteran Kim Critchley came 197th, with Chris Roberts next in 382nd. Simon Fricke came in 514th, Robert Ward 690th and John Pinder 760th to give the team a strong finish.

Other Knavesmire finishers were Tom Tarcliffe (907th), Giles Hawkings (993rd), Rory Henderson (114th), Darren Hendley (1161st), Richard Terrega (1472nd) and Phil Richardson (1659th).

In the ladies' race, the Mire girls produced a excellent performance, finishing 26th in the nationals.

On-form Nik Terrega came home in 79th, Louise Pinder 186th, Emily Baines 273rd, Caroline Warrington 415th and Clare Rowntree 498th.

In the historic Heartbeat Hobble Fell Race at Goathland, Grange was backed up by club-mates Richard Purser (10th), Barry Atkinson (17th), Graham Gill (45th), Phillip Chapman (56th), Matthew Page (73rd) and Andrew Johnson (76th).

Road specialist Maddison finished the world championship race in two hours 45 minutes.
