ANGUS McMillan maintained his excellent winter form by winning a bronze medal in the New Balance English Schools Cross Country Championships.

Running for North Yorkshire, the City of York AC athlete was only denied silver by one second in the senior boys’ race at a cold and windy Temple Newsam.

McMillan settled into a lead group of 10 before a burst going up the tough hill at the halfway point whittled the competition for podium places down to four runners.

Cheshire’s Matthew Willis made a decisive break with 1km to go to win comfortably, with Lancashire’s Nathan Dunn dropping out of contention.

McMillan chased the leader alongside Cambridgeshire’s Thomas Keen, who eventually edged him out by one second, with the former clocking 22 minutes 42 seconds for the 6.8km course.

His fellow City of York AC runners Maurice Carlton-Seal (23-59) and Luca Parker (24-39) finished 28th and 58th respectively to help North Yorkshire win the team event.

City of York’s Lara Sterritt (20-39) came 271st for North Yorkshire in the senior girls’ race over 4.1km.

Running for South Yorkshire, City of York’s Josh Dickinson narrowly missed out on a medal when coming fourth in the intermediate boys’ race.

Hampshire’s Henry McLuckie forced the pace from the start to leave Dickinson battling hard to stay in contention, but he rallied well and was second going up the final climb.

Agonisingly, Matthew Stonier (Kent) and David Stone (Middlesex) passed Dickinson in the final 100 metres to take second and third.

McLuckie covered the 5.2km course in 17-31, ahead of Stonier (17-36), Stone (17-37) and Dickinson (17-38).

City of York’s Finnian Hutchinson (54th in 18-59), Herbert Antcliff (99th in 19-25), Archie Lawson (143rd in 19-43) and Toby Antcliff (171st in 19-53) ran for the North Yorkshire team who came fifth.

In the 3.8km intermediate girls’ race, the club’s Martha Carlton-Seal (15-34) and Holly Moss (16-17) came 101st and 297th for North Yorkshire,

Meanwhile, City of York’s Lucy Hadaway broke her own meeting record in winning the under-20 women’s event at the North Eastern Counties Indoor Pentathlon Championships.

Hadaway’s haul of 3,973 points in Gateshead was 102 better than she achieved last year and included a long jump personal best of 6-22m, which took her to second in the UK U20 rankings.

Her other results were: 60m hurdles (8-94secs), high jump (1-58m), shot putt (11-07) and 60m (8-09).

City of York’s Jessica Crosby came fourth in the under 15 girls’ event, while Esme Ponder (fifth), Emily Maude (sixth), Kathryn Clague (12th), Maya Lindridge (13th) and Elvina Vassell (15th) represented the club in the U13 girls’ category.
