CITY of York Hockey Club Men I moved level with second-placed Leeds II in North League division one after a 1-0 win at Ben Rhydding.

Both teams started the game with great intensity that reflected the importance of the fixture, manifesting itself in pressure at both ends but also mistakes.

The visitors were on top for the goalless first half although Ben Rhydding had the first chance through a one-on-one with keeper Elliot Walker, who made a good save to keep City level.

York looked to have found a foothold in the game in the equally energetic second period and they took the lead through Alex Cockram after City had worked the ball down the left and found Adam Hunter to cross.

The final 10 minutes saw City park the bus and hold off Ben Rhydding's advances.

City of York II racked up their biggest victory for seven years with an 8-1 thrashing of bottom side Grimsby in the Yorkshire League premier division.

Dan Hyden fired City ahead with just a minute on the clock and doubled the lead with a reverse stick effort from an acute angle.

Ben Mould and Rob Bradley-Consitt were running the show for City in midfield and it seemed only a matter of time before they scored again.

Dan Tompkins netted from a short corner before Mould found the bottom corner to make it four with a reverse stick shot.

The best goal of the game came just before the break when a clinical passing move ended with Hyden sweeping home his hat-trick strike.

James Fitton continued the scoring in the second half from a penalty corner before a rare Grimsby attack brought a short corner from which they were able to scramble a consolation goal.

Butchart added a seventh for York from a penalty corner before George Good completed the scoring in the final minute, touching home Fitton's cross.
