YORK Indoor Bowls Club's Stuart Smith endured a gruelling seven hours of bowling to get through to the Yorkshire Singles final on March 10, where he will meet Redcar's Brian Robinson.

Smith was drawn in the preliminary round against Leeds' Steve Bottomley and struggled early on before slowly clawing away at the deficit then taking the lead late on to win 21-19.

In round two, he was up against New Earswick's Colin Pickup and got off to a good start, leading 12-0, before Pickup got back into the game. Smith pulled away again to win 21-14.

He then produced the display of the day in the semi-final against Hornsea's Mark Goodfellow to win 21-4.

Malcolm Lewars made it a double for York as he got through to the final of the Seniors Singles where he will play Redcar's Alan Jones.

Lewars was drawn in the preliminary round against Scarborough's Brian Rennison and had the upper hand throughout to win 21-9

Similarly in the semi-final he did not let his opponent, Eamon Costello from Doncaster, settle and ran out a comfortable 21-6 winner.

This Sunday at noon, York's Alan Vowles and Helen Wood play their Yorkshire Mixed Pairs semi-final.
