CITY of York Hockey Club Men I dropped to third in North League division one following a narrow 2-1 loss at home to promotion rivals Leeds II.

Both teams started strongly, with chances at both ends, but the game was goalless at half-time.

The second half was even more exciting as the intensity on the pitch grew, with Leeds breaking the deadlock after a concerted push on goal.

As City went in search of an equaliser, the visitors doubled their advantage before Dan Ellwood pulled a goal back, deflecting in Tom Feasby's smashed ball into the 'D'.

A heated finale saw both teams' numbers reduced by cards, but no further goals.

City of York II became only the second team this season to take points off the Yorkshire League premier division's second-placed side, Bradford, with a 1-1 home draw.

The visitors started brightly and on the front foot, with City guilty of playing themselves into trouble on occasions as they looked to break Bradford's high press. Jonathan Doyle was called upon to make some crucial saves as the half ended in stalemate.

As City's confidence grew, the game opened up after the restart and Bradford took the lead from a free hit.

The visitors pressed for a second but man-of-the-match Doyle kept them at bay, with help from Graeme Reid's goalline block.

At the other end, Dan Hyden drew a good save from Bradford's keeper before Dan Tompkins won a free hit and the ball made its way to James Fitton, who turned his man and coolly slotted home the equaliser eight minutes from time.

Bryce Tuckett, Sam Nicholson and James Hoile's excellent solo effort gave the hosts a healthy lead, but Halifax reduced the deficit before the break.

An even second half went awry for City after a short corner and a free hit brought Halifax level, and they found the fifth to bury City from a penalty flick with 10 minutes left.

City's man of the match was Joe Starks.

City of York V took full advantage of division three leaders Rotherham II losing as they beat visitors Leeds VI 4-2 to move to within four points of the summit.

Strikes from Chris Dutton and Pat Herriot gave the hosts a two-goal half-time lead, but Leeds opened the second period strongly and halved the deficit before Dutton restored City's advantage with a flicked finish over the prone keeper.

Leeds responded well again and scored quickly afterwards but another Herriot goal put the game beyond the visitors.

Mason Fenlon was the man of the match.

City of York VI drew 2-2 with clubmates and division four north rivals City of York VII. Andy Wilson put the VI team ahead but Neil Reader levelled before the break.
