YORK Vikings sealed the Yorkshire Over-55s Bowls League division one title with a game to spare after beating Doncaster 107-62.

All four rinks won again - meaning the team have lost only five rinks all season out of a possible 24.

The away leg was played first and York brought a 15-shot advantage back to Thanet Road.

Alan Vowles, Trevor Wilford, Jim Robertson and Jeff Normanton dropped a three on their first end but picked up two fours then a three over the next three. After 12 ends they were coasting at 22-8 before a fine comeback made it 24-22. Normanton's men held their nerve and finished with a four then a three to win 31-22.

Ken Griffiths, Alan Hampshire, Graham Instone and John Whiteley won 11 out of 15 ends to lead 19-7 before the hosts brought the final score back to 20-14.

At home, Dave Dale, Mick Cooney, Malcolm Lewars and Tony Horobin led 12-0 after four ends and continued their dominance to win 38-9, losing only six ends.

Dudley Williams, Roger Ford, Phil Parsons and Graham Brooke had a tight game in which neither team expanded on a three-shot advantage. They went into the last end trailing 17-15 but nicked victory with a three.

The Vikings' last game is a week on Friday against Hornsea Seagulls.

York Knights, meanwhile, complete their division two fixture with North Cave Yellow today at noon, while York Romans take on New Earswick Falcons.

York remain top of Yorkshire League division one after a much-needed 89-63 victory over Selby - picking up the maximum 14 points.

York led 51-20 after 10 ends and were not threatened with the aggregate score throughout, but it was vital to secure the points for the individual rink wins too, and away both sides held their nerve in the face of fightbacks.

Malcolm Lewars, Graham Brooke, Jeff Normanton and John Whiteley led 15-10 but with three ends to play the score was 15-14 before they picked up two twos. Selby got a four on the last but York held on at 19-18.

Alan Vowles, Phil Parsons, Neal Macdonald and Paul Mooring also led 15-10 but the hosts levelled with a five. Mooring's team responded by winning the closing five ends to finish 21-15.

At home, Kieran Earnshaw, Mick Cooney, Tony Horobin and Jason Parkinson led 18-3 after 10 ends but four ends later the advantage was slashed to 18-14. The home team took all but one of the remaining ends to win 29-15.

John Crowe, Jack Woodworth, Mark Clarke and Dave Stroughair had the edge throughout a close-fought game and won 20-15.

Scarborough are hot on York's heels, trailing by 11 points with two games in hand.

York 'B' got back to winning ways after two defeats when they beat Scarborough 'B' 115-56, picking up all 14 points.

At home, Ken Griffiths, Alan Hampshire, Pete Bradley and Tex Stevens were in full control and won 33-12.

Likewise Harley Wenham, Allen Clapham, David White and Geoff Walker, who triumphed 30-10.

In Scarborough, Ken Simpson, Alan Smith, Gordon Fennell and Mal Bulmer picked up a maximum eight on the sixth end to lead 14-3 and finished 30-18.

Graham Instone, Ken Robinson, Ray Calpin and Malcolm Thompson were level at 12-12 after 13 ends but had the better of the run-in to win 22-16.
