TWO neighbours from Shipton-by-Beningbrough collected seven golf trophies between them at the end-of-season awards at one of York’s newest 18-hole golf courses.

Craig Evans and Chris Carrick, who live within a stone’s throw of each other in Dawnay Garth, cleaned up at the annual awards ceremony at Forest of Galtres Golf Club, a parkland course situated between Shipton-by-Beningbrough and Haxby.

Six-handicapper Evans, 45, scooped the club’s top prize, winning the Club Championship along with the men’s scratch knockout and handicap knockout.

Carrick, who joined the club three years ago, won the women’s knockout and three other major tournaments at the club.

The grandmother-of-three said: “Golf is something than I never thought I’d play. Forest of Galtres has welcomed me with open arms and I’m really happy playing off a 33 handicap.

"My game has improved greatly after having lessons with James, the professional, at the beginning of the season.

“The members at the club have been so friendly and joining is one the best things I’ve done. I’d definitely recommend it to other local ladies.”

Evans works in Liverpool during the week so finding time to play golf can be challenging.

“Living away from York on week days means my time for golf is limited to weekends," he said.

“I joined Forest just last year and have had a great season. The course layout is really good and the lads I play with couldn’t be more welcoming.”
