MALTON & Norton Golf Club's England international David Hague lit up the last round of the prestigious Avondale Amateur in Australia with a blistering finish which netted him the runner-up spot.

The 21-year-old posted a closing 67 – four under par – with five birdies on his back nine, including one on the last where his approach finished two feet from the hole.

It gave him a five-under-par total for the tournament, shot him up the leaderboard and made him clubhouse leader.

His title hopes were eventually dashed by Australia’s Blake Windred who got up and down for par from a bunker on the 18th to win by a shot.

Hague is on a month-long tour of Australia with three fellow members of the England Golf Men’s Squad - Matthew Jordan from Royal Liverpool, Gian-Marco Petrozzi from Trentham and Jake Burnage from Saunton.

Jordan also finished in the top 10 at Avondale, in a tie for ninth place on one-over par for the tournament. His title ambitions were ended by a quadruple bogey eight on the 16th in the final round.

Hague has been in fine form throughout the tour, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Amateur where he was beaten only by the eventual champion, and only by the margin of one hole.

Last year he won the North of England Amateur and the Lagonda Trophy and represented England in the Home Internationals.

The final date for the four Englishmen is the New South Wales Amateur which runs from Monday, January 29 to Friday, February 2, and was won last year by England’s Scott Gregory.
