CITY of York Hockey Club’s men's first team climbed to third spot in North Hockey League division one as they won 5-0 at basement side Gateshead.

The visitors looked comfortable as they eased into the game in windy conditions, but they lacked decisiveness in the opposition ‘D’ on a slow, sandy pitch.

Nevertheless the deadlock was broken on the stroke of half-time, as a mazy run from Al Cockram allowed Danny Ellwood to finish from close range.

City came into the second period all guns blazing, and Cockram soon had a goal of his own, before he was joined on the scoresheet by Tom Feasby.

Ellwood claimed his second of the match, assisted by Jack Fletcher, and Jack Purrington’s coolly-taken strike from a short corner after the final whistle finished off the comfortable result.

An under-strength City of York II were beaten 8-2 at home by Yorkshire League premier division joint runaway leaders Leeds Adel.

Missing five players from last week, York were under the cosh early on from free-scoring Adel, who soon raced into a three-goal lead.

City pulled one back through Panos Panayiotopoulos after good skills in the ‘D’ from Patrick Herriott, but the visitors restored their lead with another goal before the break.

Adel continued to dominate into the second period, and netted a fifth goal a minute after the restart as their clinical forwards continued to pounce on loose City balls.

The impressive visitors plundered a further three goals before City pulled back another from a penalty flick in the dying minutes.

Herriott was cynically fouled by the keeper in the ‘D’ after being picked out by James Fitton who, despite having picked up a broken finger earlier in the contest, stepped up to slot home the resulting spot flick.

City of York III continued their good form with a 4-0 win over division one strugglers Ben Rhydding II.

Goals from John Woodhouse, Calum Green, Rhys Phillips and Dan Proud sealed a convincing performance.

City of York IV earned their first draw of their division two campaign after a 4-4 thriller at Lindum III.

The lead changed hands three times, with Henry Gard, Hamish Broadbent, Bryce Tuckett and Matt Connell on the mark for the visitors.

Gard opened the scoring following a good one-two from the baseline, before the home side hit back twice.

Broadbent and top-scorer Tuckett struck early in the second period, but two further Lindum goals put York behind again.

Connell's late tap-in earned the Minster city side a point.

The man of the match was debutant keeper David Barraclough.

Division three table-toppers City of York V recovered from a goal down to beat Slazengers II 3-1 at home.

Chris Dutton scored twice and Ben Foster forced an own goal.

City of York VI remain winless in five division four north fixtures after they lost 3-2 at Wakefield IV.

Barry Legg and Cameron Mackay got the York goals.

In the same division, City of York VII beat Ben Rhydding IV 2-0 thanks to goals from Neil Reader and Rob Abell.

City of York VIII sit four points off the top of division five north after beating Driffield 3-0, courtesy of two second-half goals from Lewis Francis and a Jack Allerton strike.

City of York X Badgers won 4-1 at Halifax V, the goals coming from Josh Perryman’s double, Emil Waites and Katie Wiggins.
