YORK Indoor Bowls Club enjoyed derby joy as their men's team overcame New Earswick in the Denny Cup.

The 102-49 success was one of a trio of victories for the Thanet Road club in national competitions.

All four of York's rinks were successful.

At Thanet Road, New Earswick's Dave Clayden, Brian Gray, Andy Fothergill and Kevin Liddell won the first two ends but then Alan Vowles, Neal Macdonald, Mark Clarke and Dave Stroughair picked up 23 shots without reply over the following 10 en route to a 28-9 victory.

The other rink was much closer, with the lead swapping hands eight times and being level with three ends to play.

Earswick's Andy Humphreys, Gary Jones, Ralph Tiplady and Paul Humphreys looked to have secured victory with a five. However, Ken Griffiths, Nigel Macdonald, Stuart Smith and Paul Mooring hit back in kind, and then won the contest 17-16 with a single.

At New Earswick, the hosts' Bob Elliot, Dave Elcock, Mick Head and Paul Dawson scored a five on the sixth end to lead 7-6 but Kieran Earnshaw, Mick Cooney, Tony Horobin and Jason Parkinson collected eight shots without reply over the next four and went on to win 28-14.

York's John Dudding, Alan Hampshire, Jeff Normanton and John Whiteley dropped singles on the first couple of ends but then restricted Colin Ellis, Dave Imeson, Tony Abbot and Bill Waldie to only five more winning ends as they triumphed 29-10.

In the next round, York play Doncaster, who pipped Selby 72-71.

York's ladies, meanwhile, started their national Yetton Trophy campaign with a 109-69 victory over Harrogate.

The Thanet Road side, one of the most successful clubs in this competition, won three of the four rinks.

At home, Carol Banks, Pauline Armitage, Sue Kirkpatrick and Helen Wood trailed 6-4 after five ends but only lost three more as they cantered to a 41-9 victory, helped by a six on the 16th end and a seven on the 18th.

Joan Jackson, Betty Richardson, Sheila Turpin and Carol Instone won their first seven ends to lead 11-0 then scored eight shots between the 14th and 16th ends en route to a 27-11 success.

In Harrogate, Dot Kennelly, Sue Tomlinson, Melanie Brooke and Linda Harrison led 11-1 after four ends and, while they dropped eight shots over the last five, they still won comfortably 25-20.

Harrogate's only success came from Gill Godden's side, who were level at 11-11 with Maureen Walker, Pat Potter, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker before having a good second half to the game to win 29-16.

York meet North Cave in the next round.

York's success in national comps continued as they beat Hornsea 10-6 on points in the Top Club tournament.

The tie pitted two of the best mixed teams in Yorkshire against each other and it proved to be a close contest with York edging a 75-74 victory on aggregate.

Two points were awarded for the two-wood singles, which saw York's Joan Jackson lose 20-7 but Kieran Earnshaw win 15-11. Four points were then awarded for each of the pairs, triples and fours.

It looked to be going York's way as Melanie Brooke, Sheila Turpin, Tony Horobin and Jason Parkinson led 18-3 in the fours while Laura Clarke, Jeff Normanton and John Whiteley were 13-2 up in the triples, even though Carol Instone and Dave Stroughair were behind in the pairs.

But, within the space of four ends, Hornsea had won the pairs 20-12, pulled back in the fours to 20-9 and drawn level at 13-13 in the triples.

Whiteley's trio picked up a six to take the pressure off and a further single on the last to win 20-13 while Parkinson's team won 21-10.

York now face last season's beaten semi-finalists, Spalding, at a neutral venue to be decided.
