RELEGATED City of York I began life in North Hockey Men’s League division one with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win at Lindum Hockey Club.

York showed great tenacity to recover from a two-goal deficit, and then survive a barrage of attacks from the home side, backed by a hostile crowd, before netting the winner in the dying minutes.

York created good chances, but the well-drilled and physical Lindum team went into the break 1-0 up.

A high-tempo start to the second half saw the hosts score a second through a penalty corner.

But with 20 minutes remaining, Jack Purrington, having found space behind the Lindum defence, was played in by Alex Cockram and calmly slotted past the onrushing keeper.

Minutes later, a pass from Anthony Bull found Ben Salter, who skilfully rounded the keeper and played the ball across goal for Jack Fletcher to equalise.

The York defensive unit was then subjected to an onslaught of Lindum attacks, with Tom Anderson, Mike Hugill, Oliver Couttie, Alex Lake and Mike Black throwing their bodies on the line and man-of-the-match Elliot Walker producing some world-class saves.

With less than five minutes remaining, Cockram played another ball through the defence, this time to Tom Feasby, who fired a vicious reverse-stick shot into the roof of the net to seal the victory.

Next Saturday at 1.30pm, City of York I play at home at Huntington School Astroturf against Wilmslow.

City of York II had no game while City of York III lost 3-0 at home to Thirsk & Malton in Yorkshire League division one in a harsh result which did not reflect the balance of the game.

The home side held their own and threatened a few times, despite having less possession, but a blinder from a short corner just before half-time put the visitors 1-0 up.

York struggled to produce the final ball into the 'D', and were punished as T&M scored two more without reply. First, they breached York’s otherwise solid defence and lobbed the ball into the net, then they caught the hosts on the break with an aerial over the defence to add a bit of gloss to the scoreline.

City of York IV went down 3-0 at Wakefield III in division two.

York had plenty of possession and attempts, but could not capitalise, and ultimately three second-half goals settled the contest. York's man of the match was Hamish Broadbent, who did everything but score.

A new-look City of York V produced a comfortable performance to beat Leeds VI 3-2 in division three.

Matthew Tipper, Ben Foster and Tony Brimble put York 3-1 up and in control before half-time. The hosts could only muster one goal in the second half.

Mark Little was the man of the match for his forward play.

City of York VI let their lead slip twice as they drew 2-2 at Ben Rhydding IV in division four north.

York rode out first-half pressure to go into the break 1-1, with James Hogg netting. A closely contested second half saw Zach Peirson tap in, before the hosts equalised again to set up a frantic final 15 minutes.

City of York VII, in the same tier, deserved better than their 4-2 loss against newly-relegated Wakefield IV.

A Pip Cook equaliser gave York hope at 1-1, but they conceded three more goals as they tired. Graham Mackfall bagged a consolation goal in overtime.

City of York IX took on the York VIII development team in a promising 1-1 draw in division five north.

York IX's goal against the run of play was cancelled out by a Luke Harbord strike before half-time, and solid defending from IX ensured it stayed that way.
