THREE students of York Shotokan Karate Club are now first Dan black belts in karate - taking the number of black belts in their family to four.
Lucy Winn and cousins Frances and Thomas Dook were graded by Alan Campbell, the chief instructor of the Japan Karate Shotorenmei, and they join sister Eleanor Dook - an assistant instructor at York Shotokan Karate Club - as black belt holders.
Grandmother Joyce Wheatley said: “I've been bringing them all training for years and they've just kept working hard.”
Younger siblings Toby Winn and William Dook also train at the club, and both currently hold purple belts.
The chief instructor of York Shotokan, and former world champion, Keith Gullen said: “I'm very proud of all three of them to have achieved this significant step in their karate journey.
"A black belt is hard work for anyone to attain and for four members of one family to hold one is a unique and significant achievement.”
Founded in 1961, York Shotokan is the oldest karate club in York. They train at Knavesmire Primary School on Mondays and Fishergate Primary School on Wednesdays.
