THE winners of the York Super 7s bowls tournament after a dramatic final were a team called Mix & Match, from Railway Institute.

Matches in this tournament comprise two pairs matches and a triples contest - M&M beating Haxby Road Rockets 6-2 in the final at RI, despite an amazing fight back by the Rockets which nearly saw them snatch a first Super 7 success in their seventh final appearance.

M&M's Andy Brookes and Pauline Cooper held on to beat Jan Suchecki and Gary Bunce 14-12 in their pairs contest.

The Rockets' other teams came back strongly, however, so that on the last end of the match in the triples, Brian White, Bryan Brigham and Mal Lewers, having trailed 11-6, led 13-12.

In the other pairs, meanwhile, Steve Cain and John Stroughair fought back from 15-6 behind to tie with Neal MacDonald and Lynne Tattersall at 17-17 after their 10 ends.

This meant if the Rockets' trio scored one shot, the overall scores would be level and an extra end required. Two more shots would have given the Rockets a 5-3 win.

However, M&M's Val Thornton, Nigel MacDonald and Gerry Bilbrough kept their nerve, scoring a single themselves in near darkness to produce another tie at 13-13 and victory overall.
