GEORGE Davey finished a gold medal winner for Henry’s Gym at the prestigious Haringey Box Cup at London’s Alexandra Palace.

The 69kg fighter emerged victorious in the elite category after defeating highly-rated Swedish opponent Mohammed Al-Maliki by a unanimous decision in the final.

Henry’s Gym stable-mate Joe Stilgoe was also a runner-up at the event, which attracts competitors from 20 different countries, while the Acomb club saw all seven of their fighters reach the semi-finals of their respective categories.

Commenting on the achievement, York’s former world championship challenger Henry Wharton said: “It was a phenomenal achievement really and we’ve created history again, because we’re the first club from York to take seven fighters there and they all won through to the semi-finals. We then had a lot of split decisions that were close to call and could have gone either way.

“In his final, George was up against a Swedish national superstar who has 50 victories from 58 bouts and has won medals all over the world. But George put on a masterclass.

“It was the main bout of the night and I don’t think anybody would mind us saying that.

“George took things to another level. He was phenomenal and bossed the fight.”
