CHRISTINA Nick and the men’s 4x400 metres team broke club records as City of York Athletic Club impressed in the North of England Track and Field League.

Their performances were the highlights of another solid display at Ellesmere Port, which saw York finish third in the division one competition for a second successive meeting.

Nick broke her own women’s shot put record with a throw of 13.73 metres which not only brought her victory on the day but earned her qualification for the British Championships.

She set her previous mark with 13.27m last season, but this new distance sees her closing in on the UK’s top 10 for 2017.

York’s 4x400m quartet of Kundai Mutukwa (who clocked 54.2 seconds for his leg), Tom Wood (51.2), Alex Botterill (47.9) and Rob Shipley (48.7) powered to victory in the relay, in a time of three minutes 22.1 seconds.

This pipped the club’s previous best record of 3-22.5 set by Richard Buck (51.9), Sandy Cowan (51.4), Sean Kelly (49.0) and Lewis Papa (51.2) back in 2002. Buck, of course, went on to be represent Team GB on the world stage.

These two victories at Ellesmere Port helped York take third on the day, behind Wigan and West Cheshire.

Botterill, whose relay split was also a personal best, clocked his fastest 800m time of 1 minutes 50.8 seconds in winning the 'A' String race.

Shipley also picked up an individual victory, taking the 'A' String 400m in 49.5 seconds.

Daniel Fleming was York’s other male victor, winning the 'A' String discus with a throw of 43.97m.

As well as her shot put record, Nick added victories in the 'B' String hammer (38.70m) and discus (41.29m).

York dominated the latter event, with Sarah Parsons taking the 'A' String spoils with a throw of 43.76m.

Molly Newton-O’Brien won the 'A' String high hump in 1.63m, while Alex Tetley claimed the 'B' String javelin with a throw of 30.25m.

On the track, there was an A-String 800m and 1,500m double for Georgia Rothwell with times of 2-18.8 and 4-45.4 respectively.

York’s Josie Parry won the 'A' String 100m hurdles in 16.2.

Charlotte Stamp went second on York’s all-time 400m list with 57.6 as she finished runner-up to Olympian Jenny Meadows (56.5).
