YORK’S Chris Quantock pushed 2014 BDO world champion Stephen Bunting all the way before succumbing to a 6-4 defeat in the second round of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy.
Quantock missed out on a last-16 clash against in-form world number three Peter Wright at the PDC European Tour event, but stayed competitive throughout against Bunting, despite the Bullet throwing five 180s, only missing a nine-darter on the final double 12 and checking out on 108.
In the early stages of the game, both players broke throw, leaving the game evenly poised at 2-2.
But Bunting took the next leg against the darts before going on to book a meeting with eventual semi-finalist Wright that he lost 6-0.
In the first round, Quantock had defeated former World Championship quarter-finalist Paul Nicholson 6-5.
There were no breaks of throw in that game, but Nicholson produced a superb 160 checkout to take the game all the way.
The Newcastle-born, Australian international then had three match darts in the deciding leg, but missed bull, double eight and double four, with Quantock keeping his composure to win through.
