SIX New Earswick IBC bowlers represented City of York when their home club hosted the Special Olympics Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Indoor Bowls Pairs competition - and they returned four medals.

Those Yorkshire & Humberside players who are competing at the National Summer Games in Sheffield in August played in their regional pairings, with other competitors travelling from Bradford, Pudsey, Wakefield plus a strong contingency from the Northern region.

A total of 38 bowlers competed across five divisions appropriate to their ability levels.

In division one, City of York’s York’s Gemma Broadhead and partner Stephen Nicholson from Wakefield won silver.

In division two, York's Chris McPherson and Andrew Bayston found themselves in tough group and came fourth.

In division three, homesters Will Sharman and Ashley Shaw, after losing heavily to eventual gold medallists in the first round, fought back to take a deserved silver.

In division four, York's Sam Hinde paired up with Steven Smith from Wakefield and, in a dramatic finish, won the last end of their last game to gain bronze.

In a very close division five, York's Diana Ward and newcomer Richard Scaife deserved more than the bronze medal for their two 5-5 draws and 5-4 defeat.

The competition was sponsored by Acomb Travel and Jet2Holidays, with awards presented by international bowler Janice Gower - who as deputy competition manager for the National Summer Games had her first taste of Special Olympics competition - and New Earswick IBC president Gordon Fratson. International umpires Dan Bluett and Colin Wison officiated and New Earswick club bowlers marked.
