LINTON-ON-OUSE arrows ace Richie Corner beat former world champion Jelle Klaasen 6-4 on his way to reaching the last 16 of the latest PDC Players Championship event.

Corner defeated Premier League ace, 2006 BDO Lakeside winner and world number-ten Klaasen in the first round at the Barnsley Metrodome before going on to also knock out Ron Meulenkamp 6-2 and Maik Langendorf (6-4).

His run was eventually ended by a 6-3 loss to James Richardson.

In the previous Players Championship tournament, meanwhile, Corner had fallen at the first hurdle, following a 6-4 reverse against Austrian Langendorf.

The Mitre player also saw his hopes of qualifying for the HappyBet German Darts Open ended by former world number one Mervyn King.

The 2009 World Championship semi-finalist defeated Corner 6-3 in the UK qualifier, also staged at the Barnsley venue.

Strensall’s Chris Quantock lost out 6-3 in that competition to Adam Hunt, having earlier whitewashed Andrew Gilding in the preliminary round.

In the Players Championship events, Quantock defeated former World Championship semi-finalist Dennis Smith 6-5, before going down 6-3 to Jamie Bain.

He was also knocked out 6-4 by Richardson in the first tournament.
