LIGHT heavyweight Paul 'Flash' Gordon extended his unbeaten record when professional boxing returned to York for the first time in six years.

Gordon stole the show at the Energise Leisure Centre, Acomb, with a thrilling points victory over Surrey's Richard Harrison.

The contest was one of five professional fights on a night dubbed 'The Revival of the Jorvik City' organised by Newark-based Carl Greaves Promotions in association with York trainer Glenn Banks.

Gordon, who had recorded two wins and a draw in his previous three professional fights, returned to action after a 10 month break and secured a 40-36 points victory over Harrison with a smooth and controlled performance.

There was top-of-the-bill disappointment, however, for Harry 'The Pocklington Rocket' Matthews who lost on points to Greg O'Neil after an eight round middleweight contest for the British Classic Challenge belt.

O'Neil, from County Durham, edged the result 77-75 after displaying a slightly busier work rate than his opponent.

York light welterweight Danny 'The Tasmanian Devil' Holmes, meanwhile, continued his professional development with a 40-36 points win over Manchester's Dale Arrowsmith.

Holmes, who had too much speed and skill for Arrowsmith, dominated every round and still has a 100 per cent record after five pro fights.

Welterweight George Rhodes Junior brought a sizeable following from his hometown of Scarborough and was involved in a barnstormer of a fight against Sheffield's Dan West.

Rhodes had been leading going into the final round but was caught early on and never recovered. Although he made it back up, the referee justifiably stopped the contest and awarded victory to West via a technical knockout.

Goole's Matthew Wigglesworth was also well supported and won 40-36 on points in a middleweight contest against Lithuanian Deividas Sajauka.

The promoters have pencilled in their next show for Saturday July 8 - with more details to be announced in the coming weeks.
