YORK'S Great Britain shot put champion, Scott Lincoln, was to compete for his country today in the European Throws Cup.

The City of York Athletic Club star missed out on the recent European Indoors Championships in Belgrade having failed to hit the qualifying mark, but he will be on the international stage during this weekend's outdoor event in Gran Canaria.

The 23-year-old is part of a 13-strong Great Britain squad – also including discus and hammer athletes – who will compete with the best throwers from across the continent.

His main target this summer is qualification for the World Championships in London in August - in which case he will need to smash his personal best - with the longer-term goal to seal a place at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
