LEADERS Heworth suffered a setback as they lost 4-2 to Acomb in the York Conservative Clubs Faber Shield Billiards League.

This was despite Gary Rogers producing the highest break so far this year, with a superb run of 130.

Rogers still lost his frame to John Ashwell, who clinched victory with a 20 unfinished break.

Acomb's Mick Borg also made breaks of 25 and 23 as he beat Darren Clark (25 break) 150-83.

Brian Birch got Heworth on the board by beating Roland Cox 150-139, before Mark Winskill levelled the match by defeating Richard Lillie 150-124, which included a break of 31.

The last frame between Heworth's Carl de Pasquale and Acomb's Paul Holmes could have gone either way until Holmes made two breaks of 31 to give Acomb the frame 150-121 and the aggregate point.

Fulford advanced their title hopes with a 5-1 victory over Bootham, with Wayne Puleston (21 break) maintaining his unbeaten run as he beat Ian Robinson 150-72.

Dollin Mercer had a good win over Matt Smith 150-109, while Terry Ward, with breaks of 32, 34 and 38, defeated Alf Appleby 150-107 to put Fulford 3-0 up.

Tim Fillingham won Bootham's only point as he beat Alan Reed 150-132, but, in a hard-fought frame, Bob Plant edged out Paul Mahoney 150-144 to give Fulford the last frame and the aggregate.

Heworth are still at the top of the league with 26 points followed by both Acomb and Fulford on 23 points.

Wayne Puleston (Fulford) and Mark Winskill (Heworth) are both unbeaten with seven wins each at the top of the Cameo Engraving Player Of The Year standings, followed by Darren Clark (Heworth) on six.

The Slater Cup 'C' Team Snooker Pairs League, meanwhile, has Fulford on top after they beat Acomb 4-1, with Heworth beating Bootham 5-0 to go into second place.
