ACOMB Ladies returned to winning ways with a 7-2 victory at Otliensians in the Yorkshire Women’s Hockey League.

Defeat would have seen Acomb surrendering top spot in division two with eight games to play – but they took the lead after 12 minutes when Jenna Allinson’s short-corner sweep was deflected by Sian Klukowski.

Acomb doubled their advantage through youngster Kiera Woods and scored a third goal when Allinson’s left-wing cross found Woods’ mother Kerry, who netted from close range.

The second half then brought a flurry of goals.

Kerry Woods netted twice from penalty corners before the home side pulled two back in the space of ten minutes, also from penalty corners.

However, driven forward by Klukowski and Georgi Wood, the Tangerines restored their five-goal lead when Kerry Woods struck with a reverse-stick strike and a further penalty corner.

With Sally Fairweather, Wendy Watson and Sam Storr working well in defence, Acomb kept the home side at bay but were unable to add any further goals.

In division two of the Yorkshire Men’s League, Acomb I made the short trip over to Huntington and lost 2-0 against City of York IV.

Acomb’s defending was not solid enough in the second half and York took advantage, scoring with an unmarked back-post tap-in and on a counter-attack with Acomb pushing forward in search of an equaliser.

Acomb II were 2-1 winners against Harrogate V in division five north.

The Tangerines took the lead seven minutes before the interval when skipper Jonny Brown spun in the circle and beat the goalkeeper with a sharp shot.

The first half was delayed when Andrew Jenner suffered a facial injury that put him out of the game.

Harrogate equalised with seven minutes to play from a deflected penalty-corner strike.

But Acomb were not finished and Brown secured all three points with his second goal of the game two minutes from time.
