KESWICK Athletics Club runner Stephen Hebblethwaite won the ever-popular York Brass Monkey Half Marathon.

More than 1,500 runners from all over the country took to the roads south of York for the 36th running of the annual event, which is hosted by York Knavesmire Harriers.

The honour of starting the race was given to 75-year-old Ray Matthews, from Maltby, who ran 75 marathons in 75 consecutive days to raise money for Rotherham's Newman School, which caters for a range of special educational needs and disabilities.

The Brass Monkey route began at York Racecourse and took participants through the villages of Bishopthorpe and Appleton Roebuck before returning to Knavesmire.

Hebblethwaite won the race in a time of one hour, nine minutes, 18 seconds, while and the first lady home was Tracy Milmore, of Birtley AC in 1-17-19.

The first local male runner was Paul Millgate, of Wetherby AC, who was 14th in 1-13-09 and first local female home was Charlotte Mason, of City of York AC, who was fifth lady in 1-23-05.
