YORK Ladies are one step away from ‘Finals Day’ in the Yetton Trophy after a surprisingly one-sided game against Cumbria.

Such was York’s dominance that all four rinks led from start to finish and none of their opponents managed to get into double figures.

York got off to an excellent start and led 32-4 after four ends. It remained that way as Cumbria conceded the game with four ends to play and York leading 73-33.

At home, Joan Jackson, Carol Banks, Helen Wood and Carol Instone had a brilliant start and held a 14-0 advantage after only five ends. They did not let their hold on the game slip as they finished 27-7.

Maureen Walker, Betty Richardson, Hayley Robinson and Sue Allen were involved in a close game which saw them 10-2 ahead and withstanding a Cumbrian surge to make the score 10-8 before pulling away to lead 15-8 when the match came to an abrupt end.

In Carlisle, both sides put in top performances with Dot Kennelly, Sue Tomlinson, Melanie Brooke and Linda Harrison only losing one of their opening 11 ends where they led 16-3 on their way to a 20-9 victory.

Zoe Eagles, Lynda Parker, Sheila Turpin and Helen Walker had the edge in a tight game which saw singles scored on ten of the 14 ends played. They led 11-6 going into the last end before finishing 11-9.

York will now play Spalding in the quarter-finals with the game to be played on Saturday, January 21 at the neutral venue of South Forest IBC, Mansfield, starting at 12.30pm.

Tonight, at 6.30pm, York play Selby in the Yorkshire Double Rinks competition and Thanet Road also hosts the National Mixed Pairs area final between Harrogate and Hornsea.

York Vikings conclude their Yorkshire Over-55s League division one fixture against bottom team North Cave White tomorrow, starting at noon.

On Saturday, at noon, York ‘B’ play Thornaby in Yorkshire League division two.
