YORK Indoor Bowls Club progressed in two national competitions last weekend - the Yetton and Mason Trophies - but exited the Egham Trophy.

The Mason Trophy fixture against Scarborough was close after five ends but York ladies pulled away scoring 25 shots to three over the following five ends to secure a 59-19 aggregate victory.

At home, Joan Jackson, Carol Banks, Melanie Brooke and Carol Instone were 7-6 up after seven ends and did not lose another as they won 35-6.

In Scarborough, Dot Kennelly, Maureen Walker, Helen Walker and Linda Harrison were 4-2 down after five ends but led 20-4 after ten, which proved too much for the home side. The game finished 24-13. York play North Cave in the next round on Friday January 20.

In the Yetton Trophy, York played Hartlepool in the last 32 stage. Their opponents held a 38-36 advantage after ten ends before York stepped up a gear and picked up 34 shots while only dropping eleven over the following five ends to win 83-57.

In Hartlepool, Carol Banks, Maureen Walker, Sue Tomlinson and Sue Allen were on top form and only lost three ends in their game to clinch a 35-7 victory.

Kennelly, Pat Potter, Melanie Brooke and Harrison came back well and won four successive ends from 16-5 down to 16-15 but could not keep the run going and lost 23-15.

At home, Zoe Eagles, Lynda Parker, Sheila Turpin and Helen Walker were 9-4 down after ten ends but turned their game around, winning all but one of the remaining ends to win 16-10.

Joan Jackson, Betty Richardson, Helen Wood and Instone were 14-12 behind with three ends to go but took the lead with a three then increased their advantage with a two before dropping a single to win 17-15. York now play Cumbria on January 7.

York’s only disappointment came in the Egham Trophy where they lost to South Shields. After five ends, the score was 16-16 but South Shields took a twelve shot advantage over the next five ends.With three to play, York had reduced the arrears to nine shots only to be out-run to the finish losing 66-48.

At home, Alan Vowles, Maureen and Helen Walker, and Mark Clarke pulled away after the eleventh end and moved the score from 10-8 to 17-11. Banks, Phil Parsons, Instone and Dave Stroughair struggled against some excellent bowling from a rink which included two England players and went down 20-8. Away, Jackson, Turpin, Graham Brooke and Craig Newton put in a top performance as they held a 16-3 advantage after 12 ends and eventually won 16-11. Nigel Macdonald, Brooke, Allen and Paul Mooring trailed 19-0 after nine ends but won six on the trot before losing 24-6.

York Vikings put last week’s defeat behind them and won both away rinks at Yorkshire Over 55 League Division One leaders Thornaby - who had only lost three previous rinks all season. Ray Calpin, Chris Bishop, Eric Hodgson and Geoff Walker found themselves 13-3 down after nine ends before turning their game round in style and winning 27-13.

Tony Hopcutt, Andy Humphreys, Dave Dale and Graham Instone were in full control of their game up to the 13th end where they held a 23-5 advantage. Instone’s men held off a fightback to win 24-19.

On Saturday, Thanet Road stages a repeat of last season`s Liberty Trophy clash between Yorkshire and Lincolnshire where the White Rose narrowly lost by three shots. On Sunday, they host the EIBA Under 25`s Double Rink game between Durham and Lincolnshire.
