NEW Earswick and Hornsea were involved in a nail-biting finish to their fixture in the North Eastern Ladies League.

At home, Doramy Bellwood, Gemma Broadhead, Irene Warrington and Monika Morgan got off to a flying start – scoring a six and two fours against S Dunn to lead 22-0 after eight ends.

The Hornsea ladies staged a mini-comeback, winning the next four ends which included getting a six at the 11th to pull the score back to 22-10.

New Earswick finished the stronger, winning six of the last nine ends including scoring the third six of the match for a 38-15 victory.

In the other home leg, Sandra Hemsley, Kath Hardcastle, Lynn Page and Majorie Watson scored a four and a three but dropped a five and a three to trail D Jones 7-8 after just four ends.

Earswick won two of the next three ends to lead 11-10 but then Hornsea charged ahead – winning nine of the next ten ends including a five and three threes to lead 31-12 after 17 ends.

Earswick picked up a four at the 19th end to go down 18-32.

At Hornsea, Margaret Pearson, Kay Hutchinson, Sally Domville and Kath Sykes lost the first four ends but won the next four to trail P Paddy 6-9 after eight ends. They only managed to pick up two singles in the last 13 ends to go down 27-8.

The final match started with three fours – Lynda Tordoff, Carol Thompson, Carol Williams and Norma Davies leading S Charter 8-4 after three ends.

Hornsea then scored only four shots at the next ten ends for Earswick to increase their lead to 20-9 and, with each side picking up six shots at the last eight ends, Earswick ran out 26-15 winners.

When the combined scores were added up, New Earswick had beaten Hornsea by just one shot at 90-89. New Earswick took six points and Hornsea four.

On Tuesday, New Earswick Falcons met Thornaby in the over-55s league.

At home, Dave Sykes, Alwyn Anderson, Graham Lockwood and Barry Johnson led 5-3 after five ends and were only one down at 8-7 against J Gillespie after nine ends.

However, they only picked up four shots at the next 11 ends while dropping two fives to go 20 shots behind with one end to play, where they scored a four to go down 31-15.

Eric Cookson, Barry Harrison, Ralph Tiplady and Dick Osguthorpe went from being 8-1 up after four ends to 10-9 down after eight ends against B Peirson.

The rest of the game was always an even contest. Earswick went into the last end leading 18-16, at which they dropped a six to lose 22-18.

At Thornaby, Dave Imeson, Gordon Fratson, Mick Head and Bill Waldie scored four at the second end to take an early 6-5 lead after six ends.

The two teams were evenly matched for the next 11 ends, with Thornaby one shot in the lead 14-15 after 17 ends. They then picked up a four at the 18th end to go on to a 20-16 victory.

Paul Murray, Pat Inwood, Rod Walker and Tony Abbot picked up eight shots in three ends to come from behind and take a 12-6 lead after nine ends.

The two sides matched each other for the next nine ends, Earswick leading 21-14 with five ends to play.

Thornaby won four out of five but, as they were all singles, Earswick went on to claim the team’s only win of the day 22-18. New Earswick lost 91-71 and took two points, while Thornaby bagged 12.
